Abstract
Histochemical and pharmacological data suggest that norepinephrine NEPI and 5-hydroxytryptamine 5-HT may function as neurotransmitters at synapses in central autonomic pathways. It has been shown that the monoamines are present in high concentrations in the intermediolateral cell columns autonomic nuclei of the
spinal grey matter 3 and that the amines can alter neuronal firing when applied directly to autonomic preganglionic cells in the thoracic 5 and sacral segments of the spinal cord 16. NEPI depressed cells at both sites, whereas 5-HT excited sympathetic cells at the thoracic level and had weak and inconsistent depressant effects on parasympathetic cells in the sacral cord.
