Drug Geek Factlet
Naloxone and naltrexone, two opioid antagonists used to counteract opiate overdoses, were initially Schedule II in the US despite having no known recreational use. In the first version of the Controlled Substances Act, derivatives of thebaine were Schedule II, and Naloxone and Naltrexone are both thebaine-derived. They were de-scheduled in three steps in 1971, 1974 and 1975, making them two of only a handful of drugs ever to be de-scheduled. (see #1 below)

In September 2010, a Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee of the FDA convened the newest governmental inquiry into the decades-old issue of DXM's abuse potential. Amusingly, one manufacturer singled out Erowid for blame.
These excerpts from Eveline Chao's book Niubi!: The Real Chinese You Were Never Taught in School provide some intriguing insight into Chinese vocabulary and slang related to psychoactive drugs and drug use.
Arrested in October 2010 for possession of ayahuasca in Texas, this Colombian shaman was en route to a ceremony in Oregon. Charges were dropped a month later leaving open questions of whether an indigenous shaman can lead ayahuasca ceremonies in the U.S.
